SOLVE THE CHALLENGES

Education for Refugees

“Education and innovation will be the currency of the 21st century…” President Barack Obama – Cairo University, Egypt

For nearly five years, the crisis in Syria has fallen most heavily on the smallest shoulders. Across the region, about three million Syrian children are not in school today. In Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq—countries  have generously opened their classrooms to Syrian children,  but the level of need continues to vastly outstrip resources.

Education, technology, and philanthropic communities have a critical role to play in tackling these challenges by designing solutions focused on the end-users: refugee children themselves.

International organizations, governments, and partners on the ground are working together every day to try to address all aspects of this crisis. Connect with them. Learn the landscape. Understand the specifics of the problem you are trying to address.

If you are a designer or developer, build your technology under fully open licenses. Build with technologies already accepted and used in local ecosystems. Solutions on locally built, open-source technologies can scale

Life changes dramatically for refugee families day- to-day. In this sea of uncertainty, education is a refuge, and our solutions must meet the needs of children and youth in whatever circumstances they face. Have a plan for how you will work with partners on the ground to test, iterate, and refine your ideas in politically complex and dynamic
